EBOOK or EPUB (Markswoman Asiana #1) ï Rati Mehrotra
35 of 5 stars at The BiblioSanctum s eally not much to say about Markswoman beyond the fact it was a thoroughly engaging and straight up good ead I blew through this book in a little over a day and I loved how what started off as a typical YA ish premise eventually developed and grew into a enigmatic mature and interesting storyOur protagonist is Kyra a Markswoman in the Order of Kali a sisterhood of elite warriors trained to protector and enforce the laws of this unforgiving post apocalyptic like world Because of the nature of their work Markswomen also occasionally take on the ole of assassin and although Kyra Darkness Light recently passed all her tests to become a full fledged sister the order s leader Shirin Mam still has concerns about hereadiness to take on these types of missions on her own Due to her tragic past Kyra was one of the youngest girls to ever join the sisterhood and much unresolved anger still simmers within her for the bandits that killed her entire family Secretly she dreams of one day hunting them all down and exacting her evengeBut then Shirin Mam dies mysteriously and for Kyra it is like losing her
Mother For The Second Time for the second time the order s Mistress of Mental Arts named Tamsyn whom Kyra has never
gotten along with becomes the new leader of the Order of Kali Tamsyn s veiled threats along with becomes the new leader of the Order of Kali Tamsyn s veiled threats well as her hunger for power makes Kyra believe she has something to do with Shirin Mam s death And so before the order s new mistress can claim her predecessor s magical sword our protagonist makes off with it and escapes through a Transport Hub one of the strange portals left over from the world s ancient past Emerging in a desert Kyra finds herself in the home of the Order of Khur shunned from all the others because they are the only one composed
of men One of their Marksmen Rustan helps bring Kyra s news of men One of their Marksmen Rustan helps bring Kyra s news of Mam s death to his elders and heeds her when she expresses her suspicions about Tamsyn s treacheryThe world of Markswoman Asiana is a very cool place Its past is slowly evealed as we discover that many centuries ago a Great War devastated the land and changed it forever But because there is also magic and hints at the emnants of advanced technology the esult is a fascinating kind of fantasy and sci fi dystopian mix Harsh conditions have forged a very different kind of civilization as merciless as the landscape Thus the Orders of Peace was born giving ise to a new system to eign in the chaos and maintain harmony The worst crimes were punishable by execution carried out by MarkswomenKyra herself was an archetypal kind of protagonist but that didn t make her any less interesting to follow She has the uintessential backstory of tragedy involving a murdered family fueling her bloodthirsty desire for vengeance even though Markswomen are supposed to leave their pasts behind when they commit to their order That said her first mission ended in near disaster when she almost failed to kill her mark a man who was part of the clan who massacred her loved ones because of a momentary lapse of esolve The experience forces her to ecognize that there is still much for her to learn as well as make her Not Handsome Enough rethink her path in lifeFor all that Markswoman was an enjoyableead though plot and character development was still lighter than I would have preferred Magical sentient weapons and the suggestion of alien tech aside the world building was also sparse and lacked a uality to bring it all together despite all the wonderful ideas and imagination poured into its creation As a eading experience this was not a very deep one nor do I think the story will end up being too memorable as most of the plot especially early on elies heavily on prophecy tropes and other familiar elements Still to the novel s credit the second half contained a lot surprises and overall this was a uick and easy Busy Park read undeniably fun while it lastedA warning though before I wrap this up this book ends with an abrupt cliffhanger Since Ieceived Markswoman and its seuel Mahimata at the same time for Beer Law: What Brewers Need to Know review I was already prepared toead both books as a whole but GIS and Fruleins: The German-American Encounter in 1950s West Germany readers who prefer their book endings with actualesolutions may want a heads up Personally I m looking forward to divin. Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the Order of Kali one of a handful of sisterhoods of highly trained elite warriors Armed with blades whose metal is imbued with magic and guided by a strict code of conduct the Orders are sworn to keep the peace and protect the people of Asiana Kyra has pledged to do so yet she secretly harbors a fierce desire to avenge her murdered family When Tamsyn the powerful and da.
Rati Mehrotra ´ 7 SummaryKnow all that good inner stuff and while that sounds nice and all you can t see a lot of it Tamsyn and Shirin Mam had balls of fucking steel if you ll forgive my wording but most of the other characters They left a lot to be desiredI did eally like how the author used palindromic prime numbers as passwords for the doors Call me a nerd but little things like that make me happy The whole thing about how Kyra and Shirin Mam would pass on was
Kind Of Eerie Andof eerie and but at the same time especially Kyra and her dreams I d love to see that developed in the upcoming booksThe pacing on the other hand was shaky The beginning ambles a little When her mentor dies Kyra isn t forced on the Big Bad Detective Agency run so much as she just hightails it out of there and at that point Tamsyn hadn t seemed like a terribly bad character and so Kyra s actions do come off asash and bewildering The plot starts ambling again after the death only to collide headfirst into the tragedy that was Markswoman s Romantic Subplot In which Kyra doesn t befriend Rustan so much as she does piss him off get beat up by him and then plummet headfirst into what can be best described as a tragically ill timed The Placer romance In that order Then the plot slows again only to speed up in the last few pages If the author s goal was to give us all whiplash She succeeded Markswoman was like one of those the history of the universe in a year kind of videos when nothing happens in the first 365 days and then suddenly you hit the last few hours and BOOM apes become people invent writing make Pyramids start the Renaissance go to spaceMOVING ON THE ROMANCE uite honestly I thought Markswoman would ve been better without theomance But if there had to be of all the possible ways it could ve gone Kyra x a cute badass girl from the Order of Kali or Kyra x a cute badass girl from a neighboring order or Kyra x a cute badass guy from the order of Khur who actuALLY TREATS HER WELL how did we end up hereWithout giving anything away Otto Freundlich: Cosmic Communism right before the descent intoomance some other asshole assaults Kyra via her mind and after saving her the first thing her male The Tattooist of Auschwitz (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, romantic lead does is pull some aggressive tsundereomantic bullshit on her and WHY There was no chemistry and then suddenly we Profiles in Leadership: Historians on the Elusive Quality of Greatness re told they have all the chemistry and the guy is this close to being unable to keep it in his pants any I m paraphrasing of course but that was very much the sentiment and I was very much put offAnd then it gets even worse because I actually kind of admired Kyra s spirit and tenacity before even though it wasn t as delved into as it could ve been the thing with her dead family s only brought up here and there and in her goals against Tamsyn she seems fierce at times but oddly emotionless and forced at others BUT BUT BUT so she s in for the fight of her life Her work over the past few months have been building up to this moment SHE MIGHT DIE SHE S THE YOUNGEST MARKSWOMAN PART OF A HIGHLY TRAINED SISTERHOOD OF ELITE WARRIORS IS ARMED WITH A TELEPATHIC BLADE IS ABLE TO WALK THROUGH DOORS NO ONE ELSE CAN AND HAS THE STEELY MIND TO SHUT OUT THE LURING CREEPY SUGGESTIONS OF AN EVIL SENTIENT GUN which was a super cool idea I d definitely be down foreading about ANd then some guy who can t ead the atmosphere or spare consideration for her mental state comes along and all she can think of is Why had he kissed her Why had it hurt so much when he stepped away from her and left the oomKyra maybe not now YOUR LIFE IS ON THE LINE DAMMITAll in all Markswoman wasn t a terrible Other People's Property: A Shadow History of Hip-Hop in White America read The writing was nice I liked a lot of the ideas that went into this novel and Kyra was at most times pretty cool to follow along But with the pacing the shaky characterization theomance it had potential but ended up slipping to the lower end of okay This was a fast paced fun ead It was YA so it unfortunately it fell into some of the same YA pitfalls I tend to dislike most notably an instalove triangle Not to fear though the love interest doesn t even show up until halfway into the book and the omance was in no way a central plot threadI loved the characters here Kyra does not have special snowflake syndrome She is the youngest full fledged Markswoman in the. N Among them is Rustan a disillusioned Marksman whose skill with a blade is unmatched He understands the desperation of Kyra’s uest to prove Tamsyn’s guilt and as the two grow closer training daily on the windswept dunes of Khur both begin to uestion their commitment to their Orders But what they don’t yet ealize is that the line between justice and vengeance is thin as thin as the blade of a knife. .
G into the next one not only to see what happens next but because I m also confident that Mahimata will bring much on the characters story and world I ll be picking it up soon I was iffy about this one for the first 70 pages or so but I eally enjoyed it There were times where it dragged a bit and could ve been condensed but overall it was better than I was expecting
There are still some things that I m confused about with egards to the world building but I don t knoware still some things that I m confused about with egards to the world building but I don t know it ll ever be cleared up The
way I think we ever learn about the history and the things that are confusing is if there are some sort of flashbacks in the next book or insights into the war that kept being eferenced or even before that I just want to know about the Transport Hubs and who the people in the past civilization were Personally I felt the omance wasn t necessary in this one I think I would ve enjoyed some bits than I did if the omance wasn t there It just felt kind of forced to me The odd love triangle ish thing was just weird to me It almost felt like theOnly Way I Think We
romance was there just to have a omance subplot and didn t add anything All in allwas there just to have a Letters to Rollins romance subplot and didn t add anything All in all m looking forward to the next book This book was a big surprise for me Why Because I had started off listening to the audiobook in the car while my kids were with me and they insisted that I could only listen to it when they were there too So I did hence the lengthy time to completion I thought maybe they might get bored as this book is a bit slow in some parts and has than a few political machinations going on but no they LOVED IT What I liked about this were the uniue setting post apocalyptic but Indian inspired with the devastation so far in the past that things have essentially cycled forward into a brand new civilisation I liked that the main character Kyra was chosen to complete a task but isn t necessarily a chosen one in terms of her abilities Her struggles made hereal and likeable The Britain, Europe And The Third World romance if you can even call it that was extremely light handed It s of a hopefulness for the next book Overall I thought the worldbuilding was uniue the story interesting and any weaknesses are mostly due to the fact that this is a debut novel I m very interested to see how the story concludes in the second book and to see if Mehrotra continues to level up as a writer Note The 4 starating actually comes from me My 9 and 12 year old Scotland Yard rate this book 5 and 45 starsespectively I AM HERE FOR SISTERHOODS OF BADASS WOMEN My eading interests fall pretty neatly into two categories books full of badass characters the characters I want to become and trashy omance novels for the trashy person that I am I was so certain Markswoman would fall into the former category but it ended up falling into neither My emotions while Unverified: A Novel reading went something like bewildered confused uite frankly lost bored a little than slightly angry confused oh what the book endedLet s START AT THE VERY BEGINNING The map was charming the intro fairly interesting I liked the while we hold a katari in our hands and the Kanun in our hearts a word from us can stillaise armies and crumble mountains line But then we get to the opening chapters in Kyra and Rustan s POV and well It s not a bad thing necessarily no part of Markswoman was inherently terrible except for maybe that bit toward the end that I ll get to later and this is going to sound Grand Teton Explorers Guide really bad at the beginning but please bear with me I ll explain I wasn teally feeling how the good majority of the good characters in the story seemed so uncertain about executing And the uncertain waffling didn t stop at killings it extended to practically all other aspects of the character s life But Markswoman and Marksmen are chosen and I find it hard to believe that so many wafflers were chosen Kyra I can see Kyra makes sense her first kill left her uncertain and her character s brave and strong and fairly tenacious in her other actions But Rustan Rustan He waffles a lot on everything and avoids UFO Crash at Roswell: The Genesis of a Modern Myth responsibility just as often and wow his character was frustrating A lot of the elders of Kali were the same as well as many of Kyra s friends and it didn t match with the narrative Markswoman and Marksmen are chosen on spirit Ngerous Mistress of Mental Arts assumes control of the Order Kyra is forced on theun She is certain that Tamsyn committed murder in a twisted bid for power but she has no proof Kyra escapes through one of the strange Transport Hubs that are the emnants of Asiana’s long lost past and finds herself in the unforgiving wilderness of a desert that is home to the Order of Khur the only Order composed of me.
