Under Ground (PDF)
INITIAL THOUGHTSThe cover of Under Ground caught my ye on Netgalley and upon reading the blurb that piued my interest The Trust even Netgalley places this book into the Adult Literature category though when I read the blurb it made me think this book falls into the post apocalyptic genre Will I still think the same after reading it MY REVIEWI reuested this title from Netgalley and received a free copy in A Scandalous Regency Christmas exchange for my honest review The cover showslevator buttons with the down arrow glowing red I like the byline of Fear Runs Deep as it fits uite a lot of the characters within the bookThe area around the site of Sanctum is in the middle of fields and forests in an isolated area of Maine From the outside and above ground Sanctum has a high chain link fence topped with barbed wire It is surrounded by two trenches that have to be crossed via cattle grates Once over the trenches all that is actually visible above ground is an The Return entrance hatch Thentrance hatch looks rather like a large safe door There is also a wind turbine above ground which powers Sanctum The actual living area of Sanctum is set 50 feet underground and is a luxury hide out from the apocalypse Just one of the luxury features of the Sanctum is high tech moving picture screens in the place of windows these windows change as the day goes on to give the illusion of day and night There is also a choice of different views Sanctum has been marketed to high arning professionals and preppers alike The book is about the people that bought into the idea of this haven then made their way to it when a virus made it look like the world was going to be coming to an nd The man in charge of this Under Ground safe haven is Greg Fuller and his grand plans for the Sanctum haven t been Prince Hafizs Only Vice entirely met there s lots of unfinished jobs to be done like a whole apartment and the medical suite The one thing left undone that causes the most discomfort to the Sanctum residents is thelevators are not fully operational which means using the staircases That s sort of the main reason why Will Boucher Aristotle and Poetic Justice ends up being caught up in the whole situation thatnsues Will is desperate for the money he will And Bid Him Sing: A Biography of Countée Cullen earn from helping out at the Sanctuary as his wife Lana is terminally ill and they have large medical bills to paySo I ll introduce you to the inhabitants of the Sanctum that have paid a lot of money to have a place an apartment within itWithin the first group one of the inhabitants didn tven know Sanctum Bachelors and Bunnies: The Sexual Politics of Playboy existed The Gill group consists of Tyson Gill his four year old daughter Sarita and the Au pair Cait Tyson is in the process for taking Cait to the airport for her to return to her home in Africa Then as soon as he realises that there is a potential apocalyptic viral outbreak her drives to Sanctum only stopping on the way only for car fuel and some uickly purchased clothing for Sarita Cait will be taking the place of Tyson recently passed wife RaniThe family that is very central to the whole book are the Guthries They are living in one of the smaller units within Sanctum and their family consists of father Cam mother Bonnie and the teenage twins Brett and Gina The Guthries are heavily into being preppers so when things become difficult in Sanctum they naturally want to be in charge and have plenty to say on what should and needs to be done Brett is the mini version of his father all camouflage guns and prepping Gina has to be the dutiful daughter compliant and doing as she is ordered very much seen and not heard The unlikely couple of the highly anxious James Maddox and his highly strung wife who wears the trousers in the relationship Vicki also have an apartment in Sanctum Vicki insists on her dog Claudette being allowed into Sanctum The dog is definitely Vicki s baby andats gourmet dog food and actually drinks bottled Evian water which becomes a problem in the latter half of the book You come to the conclusion within a short time that Vicki values Claudette than her husband James There s also a strange tension between the Maddoxes and Tyson GillAnother family in Sanctum is the Park family father Yoo jin or Eugene as his nglish nickname his wife Stella "a dentist and their teenaged games and internet obsessed Jae Lin "dentist and their teenaged games and internet obsessed Jae Lin There is an instant conflict towards this family from the Guthries who don t like foreigners tc causing some
Uite Racial Nastiness It S Uite Ironic racial nastiness It s uite ironic Gina Guthrie immediately crushes on JaeFinally the last family is the Dannhauser s arrive and cause a stir as the Girl in Pieces elderly Caroline appears to be ill She arrives with her husband techie Leo and daughter who cares for her Trudi a 42 yr oldx ballerina The Guthrie s demand that the Dannhauser s must be uarantined until they can be sure Caroline does not have a contagious disease or the dreaded virus that is going to cause the apocalypseSo what happens with all these families Sarita Gill goes wandering in the night to find a lost toy and discovers the dead body of Greg Fuller with small bloody footprints leading away from the body Will Boucher becomes the Battleground Chicago: The Police and the 1968 Democratic National Convention elected leader of the disgruntled group The residents of Sanctum are already disappointed in their so called 5 star luxury safe haven that doesn t have a medical centre or a medical professional The nearest thing to a Doctor in Sanctum is Stella Parks who is a dentist Will sort of gets the leader position as no one wants the Guthrie s to be in charge of anything Everyone is nervous as to whether Greg s death was an accident or murder Things become worse when Will tries to input a security code and the system goes into lockdown When the residents realise they can no longer open the outer hatch of Sanctum as the code has literally died with Greg Naturally there is panic and lots of other things happening both to the individual families and the group as a whole There are deaths but I m not going to say who of how they dieSo whatlse can I share without giving too much away There s the rather cold hearted and gory solution the Guthrie s come up with to unlock the lockdowned room the Dannhausers are uarantined in Another horrifying incident is someone attempts to rape Cait Tyson Gill s Au pair Then there s the sweeter fairly innocent boyfriendgirlfriend thing going on between Jae and Gina Leo Dannhauser is somewhat of a mystery too he is so uiet about his past ven with his own daughter Leo almost seems hauntedDon t think the book is all gore and darkness there are some lighter comedic sections too I njoyed reading from James point of view as he is on the journey to Sanctum He begins to ponder if his wife s precious pampered dog Claudette will be allowed into Sanctum I mean is it justifiable that a dog should be permitted a space in Sanctum that could potentially be given to human for their survival Then James muses that he could Bridging Liberalism and Multiculturalism in American Education eat the gourmet dog food if food supplies run low He actually chuckles to himself that if supplies become really low he couldven at the dog It s uite ironic how James goes into Sanctum really disliking the dog but towards the nd of the book nds up clinging to the dog for a reason
to continue to live and surviveOne thing I did dislike about the book which may change when the actual book continue to live and surviveOne thing I did dislike about the book which may change when the actual book released was the fact that at the beginning of the book there is a list of the floors and their layout and whose rooms are where within Sanctum This placement of the list in my opinion reveals too much ven revealing characters we have yet to meet and revealing something inadvertently about Will Boucher I think it is a useful list but I would have preferred for the list to be placed in the book after the initial introduction of all the characters I found the way Jae offers to read to Caroline when she is ill and bedridden very ndearing It shows you how he has been brought up to respect his lders and use his manners and be polite too I loved the interaction between the different characters and their personalities Throughout this book you go from the residents thinking Sanctum is some kind of vacation destination to it becoming increasingly restrictive until the point it feels like a prison or a tomb that they all may City Limits end up dying inHelp doesventually arrive thanks to the residents pooling their resources and skills A page turning locked room mystery from the combined talents of Sarah Lotz and Louis Greenb. Eems destined for disaster People are dying in various parts of the world and when the virus i SL Grey is a pseudonym used by Sarah Lotz who I ve read and Louis Greenberg who I haven t They ve previously collaborated on the Downside horror trilogy Under Ground however is a standalone novelThe premise of Under Ground is very similar to that of Day Four a novel by Lotz published arlier this year Day Four follows a large diverse cast of characters stuck aboard a marooned cruise ship inducing a sense of claustrophobia and uncertainty the characters are stalked by an unseen horror and lose contact with the outside world which may or may not be in a near apocalyptic state Under Ground is much the same xcept it s set in a luxury survival condominium The Sanctum A virus is spreading flights are being grounded so the wealthy clients who ve bought into The Sanctum s condos all make their way there A bunch of spoilt mostly pretty unpleasant people being cooped up together in an underground bunker which is rather less fancy and spacious than they were promised goes about as well as you d xpect and gets ven worse when someone turns up dead and the residents discover they may not be able to leave or ven call for help Under Ground starts off so fast moving and absorbing it practically reads itself Like Day Four it gives a lot of different characters alternating chapters keeping the pace speedy and creating lots of cliffhangers It s set in Maine not that it really matters the bunker could be anywhere but has an international flavour with the cast including Americans Brits South Africans and characters with German Korean South American and Indian heritage Unfortunately Under Ground rather runs out of steam the longer the group are trapped r underground And it really doesn t help if you ve also read Day Four as so many of the details are similar including the descent into sualor as things start breaking down and supplies become scarce what is it with these stories and stuff about toilets not flushing The authors attempts to make Gina likeable fall totally flat and her romance with Jae feels unnaturally shoehorned in I m not sure what I thought of the nding ither though I liked the journal formatThis book has a good premise but it kind of slows down and peters out about halfway through and never regains the D DAY Through German Eyes 2 exciting momentum it has at the beginning It s a funasy uick read compelling but lacking any true omg moments view spoilerIt s a spoiler to say it so I can t really warn anyone off unless they happen to have taken the risk of clicking on this spoiler tag of course but it isn t actually horror Baroque Personae either It s a straight up murder mysterythriller I suppose there s no claim that it is horror but given the authors background and how others have shelved it on Goodreads that was myxpectation If I d known otherwise I d have been a lot less keen to read it hide spoiler This novel sees a group of characters fleeing across America when a pandemic hits the country While most are panicking the apocalypse has proved these people right they are prepared having purchased apartments in a luxurious survival condominium where they can sit out the disaster in air conditioned comfort complete with pool plenty of supplies and great medical facilities Well almost For almost as soon as the new residents move in it is clear that organiser Greg Fuller has been cutting corners The lift is not working there is no doctor and the d cor has been done on the cheap The inhabitants of The Sanctum are a wide ranging group and include gun crazed survivalist Cam Guthrie with his racist vicious bully of a son a wife suffering from some kind of religious mania and daughter Gina Jae Lin Park and his parents Tyson Gill his young daughter Sarita and his South African au Pair the rich and bossy Vicki Maddox and husband James lderly couple the Dannhauser s and their daughter Trudi and Will Boucher who has arrived to help Greg From the start this ill assorted group with their secrets and personal issues are not destined to get along However when one of them is found dead murder is suspected and fear stalks those underground For although looking for safety the group find themselves in a dangerous situation than they could have imaginedI have mixed feelings about this book Although the general premise is an interesting one most of the characters just seem so stereotypical that it is hard to Warm To Them And to them and much of the *Dialogue Is Stilted And Unrealistic *is stilted and unrealistic njoyed the first half of the novel than the nd which seemed rushed and confused with too many possibilities and suspects However certainly the storyline showed some promise and I would try another book by this author despite the weaknesses Actual Rating 35What happens when a racist sexist gun obsessed family It s the

DOWNLOAD ´ Book, PDF or Kindle PUB ↠ S.L. GreyUt has the help arrived in time Who will be left to rescueSo did I njoy the book Yes I would normally say I do not read horror at all but this book was a brilliant mix of lots of post apocalyptic horror and what I can only describe as people watching Would I recommend the book Yes I d highly recommend this book It is a very thought provoking read There are many situations in the book where you ponder how you would have reacted if you had been presented with the same dilemmas as the characters within the book Would I want to read another book if this is a series To be honest the Education in a New Society: Renewing the Sociology of Education ending to this book suggested to me that it is a standalone read Would I want to read if there were to be another book containing some or all of the characters in this book Yes specifically two of the surviving characters I can t say who as that would itself be a major spoiler but I m sure you will guess who I mean when you read the book for yourselves Would I want to read other books by this author Wow yes please Injoyed how the book made me think and try to solve the deaths as well as think What if there ver was such an pidemicFINAL THOUGHTSWow what an The Baby Swap Miracle ending I did notxpect that at all The person responsible for the deaths in Sanctum turned out to be one of the last people I would have xpected it to be Then the person responsible tells us the reader the truth about what really happened and how it all happened in The Sanctum in such a cold and calm way It casts uite a sinister twist on the whole book sort of bordering on horror I really think this book would make a fantastic film or TV show It would be along the lines of the Tale Of The Unexpected Series by Roald Dahl that I watched many years ago with my grandparents The way the characters minds worked and the insider view that the reader gets at the individual character s POV The way we got to delve into the plot made reading this book like watching an pisode of Criminal Minds I think I had gone through so many different scenario s to xplain the vents and deaths in the Sanctum This book kept me on the dge of my seat to the very nd What a thrilling read All very apocalyptic but on a small scale as a virus descends upon America and a group of strangers who have all invested in an underground sanctuary make their way to it to Excommunication: Three Inquiries in Media and Mediation escape thend of the world But once they re all locked inside and amidst the already tension filled Gender Justice encounters between the different characters a dead body is found and a murderer is now on the loose It s a simple setup but the writinglevates it and the characterizations sets it apart from similar fare Trying to figure out who the killer is uite a ride And just when you think you may have a handle on things bodies start turning upAll in all I finished the book in 2 days and loved it Totally unexpected plot developments and the Generations and Collective Memory ending had me floored The idea of this thriller sounded perfect for me millionaire families buying into an underground complex toscape a deadly virus on the surface They nd up getting trapped inside and then the chaos begins when the bodycount starts to riseI was initially disappointed with the authors writing style a collaboration between Sarah Lotz and Louis Greenberg The characters aren t great and I didn t feel much depth to them despite knowing their backgrounds and why they were there The setting isn t well described and the tension is on the whole a bit of a wash out There were only two characters I thought felt genuine James and Reuben It doesn t feel much like there is a killer on the loose but Brett a brutal 18 year old who bullies his way around the complex gets away with a LOT and that also didn t seem genuine given the circumstances The book isn t scary or thrilling and reads a lot like teen fiction rather than as mentioned in the blurb a Stephen KingMichael Crichton mash upI stuck with Under Ground however because the pages were turning uickly nough and I m glad that I did After 250 pages of stumbling along the style and the substance ramps right up The tension is full on throughout the last 40 pages and the build up is actually worth the From Notes to Narrative effort James really comes into his own as a character and thending is satisfying Guitar Makers: The Endurance of Artisanal Values in North America enough to not feel like a cop out THIS is where the thrill comes into play I couldn t take myyes off it and nded up sat in a car park racing through to finish before I felt I could drive home from workI think that if the whole book had been written with the same tension and skill as the final section I would have been able to give it 4 stars but as it stands I would give it 255 if I could Tell ya what Go to the bookstore or library Find this book Close your yes step three feet to the right and pick any book It will be b Honestly it s been a few weeks now since I finished Underground and I ve found it
difficult to find the nthusiasm to write ato find the nthusiasm to write a I guess that says a lot about how I felt about the bookThe premise and genral idea of the story was brilliant A hidden facility built underground to shelter a handful of families from a worldwide pandemic of a killer flu As you would imagine the stress of this combined with living in such close proximity with strangers causes some issues and ultimately a fair few murders There were uite a few problems for me with the writing style of the book but I could appreciate a few social aspects the author xplored during the story I liked the differing statuses of the characters some rich some poor and how this impacted the way they thought of and treated ach other Racisim religion and a sexual predator were also thrown in for good measure and to crease dissension and unease within the group I could see how these were trying to build a foundation of suspense for the reader but because of how awkwardly and boring the characters were written I never felt really invested in the story or nervous about who would survive or die The characters themselves never really seemed bothered that a killer was amongst them and if they didn t care why should the reader I found the pacing of the book to be too slow for my tastes and I did struggle to push through to the nd Even the deaths failed to ramp up the xcitment becuase of the lack of reactions from the charactersThe only small saving grace was the nding I can honestly say I didn t know who the killer was until the big reveal Yet I can t help but think that the author worked so hard to keep this a secret that other issues within the book were left to falter and fail First of all a warning Under Ground induces claustrophobia Unless you have chocolate Chocolate helpsThe Sanctum is an underground bunker system meant to be utilised if the world faces an apocalypse and let s face it nothing so great in a book as a good apocalypse apart from perhaps a story about people trapped underground DURING a possible apocalypse so you have no actual clue what is going on above at all This novel xplores themes of survival and personality within the context of a gorgeously tighty knitted locked room mysteryAn Fragments eclectic cast of characters arrive at The Sanctum desperate to be safe from a creeping virus that is seemingly about to wipe out humanity But things are not asxpected nothing works as it
